 note = {application/pdf, Ma xiang yao was established by Chen Hongyi in 1852, initially as a palanquin company. Chen extended his business to transportation and private postal service, and the company developed a large network that spread over west-south China. The original article "On the largest private transport company in west-south China, 'Ma xiang yao'," written by the editorial group for Sichuwangs'traffic history, illuminates the lives of porters and recruitment practice for workers, as well as describing the structure of the company. The author of this piece has translated all two chapters (chapter 1 abridged) and appended introduction and postscript in which he discusses the significance of this research in the scholarships of modern Chinese history.},
