She has made many researches on family stress situation with putting a focus on a family's perception and meaning. In her researches and clinical work, she is keeping on paying her attention to a stress situation, ambiguous loss and its potential effect on perception and meaning. She clarified how people learn to live with ambiguous loss through the analyses of the narratives of people who suffer the loss, There are two basic types of ambiguous loss. First, people are perceived by family members as physically absent but psychologically present. Secondly a person is perceived by family members as physically present but psychologically absent. People who are facing both types of ambiguous loss have to manage something very different from ordinary, clear-cut loss. Her theory can be adapted to a wider diversity of people and families as well as a wider variety of stressors.
